Kyodo News in Japan has an update on Daisuke Matsuzaka’s comeback from Tommy John elbow surgery.
Matsuzaka threw a bullpen session yesterday for the first time since going under the knife in June, tossing around 20 pitches at the Red Sox’s spring training complex in Florida.
Afterward he called it “a warmup” and said he expects to “throw harder next week.”
He’ll likely be limited to bullpen sessions and long-tossing for a while, as even an optimistic timetable for Matsuzaka’s recovery wouldn’t have him returning to game action before midseason. And given his 5.03 ERA and terrible walk rates since going 18-3 with a 2.90 ERA in 2008 the Red Sox aren’t exactly motivated to rush him back in the final season of a six-year, $52 million contract.
