Juan Carlos Oviedo released from jail, won’t face identity fraud charges in the Dominican

Marlins reliever Juan Carlos Oviedo was arrested in the Dominican Republic Thursday afternoon on a warrant related to his ongoing identity fraud case.

But he wasn’t held for very long at all.

According to the AP, via NBCSports.com, the warrant was actually out-dated and Oviedo was released quickly from his holding cell without having to pay bail. He’s not facing any charges in his native Dominican because he continues to cooperate with the authorities’ investigation into his own crime.

Oviedo, formerly known as Leo Nunez, was applying for a work visa at the U.S. Consulate in Santo Domingo when he was detained. He will presumably try for that visa again on Friday with an eye on returning to the United States sometime soon.

The Fish are expected to tender him a contract for 2012 to serve as a setup man to closer Heath Bell.
