Reds hire Jim Riggleman as Double-A manager

Quitting on the Nationals in the middle of the season made it tough for Jim Riggleman to land another prominent big-league job, but the Reds have hired the 59-year-old former Nationals, Padres, Cubs, and Mariners manager to be their new Double-A skipper.

Nothing is official yet, but Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports that Riggleman will manage the Pensacola Blue Wahoos of the Southern League, noting that he and Reds general manager Walt Jocketty “have a history together” from their time in the Cardinals’ organization.

Riggleman worked as a scout for the Giants following his resignation, which was due to contract squabbles and came with the Nationals having won 11 of 12 games. Davey Johnson, who replaced Riggleman in Washington and finished the season with a 40-43 record, was given the full-time gig last month.

Double-A is quite a step down for Riggleman, but a good year in the Southern League should put him in position to get back to the majors in 2013 as, say, a bench coach.

LAS VEGAS — Jim Bowden reports that the Kansas City Royals are close to agreement with outfielder Billy Hamilton. He says they are “just working through bonuses and pending physical.” Hamilton was non-tendered by the Cincinnati Reds a couple of weeks ago following six seasons with the club, making him a free agent.

Hamilton is one of the fastest men to ever play the game, but he has never come around as a hitter. In his six seasons with the Reds he put up a line of .245/.298/.333 (OPS+ 70). While he has stolen 277 bases over that period, getting caught 63 times, he has never once led the league in steals, primarily because he just doesn’t get on base enough. He is an excellent center fielder, but the bat is so sub-par that even the glove and the wheels are not good enough to justify going to arbitration with him.

Perhaps a change of scenery will do him good. He will certainly bring some excitement to Kansas City. He’s a fun guy to watch play.
