Five teams are interested in Carlos Guillen

Carlos Guillen’s agent Wilfredo Polidor told Enrique Rojas of ESPN Deportes that the Royals, Marlins, Twins, Athletics and Mariners have expressed interest in his client. The link is in Spanish, so you might just have to take my word for it.

Guillen, 36, batted just .232/.265/.368 with three home runs, 13 RBI and a .633 OPS over 102 plate appearances with the Tigers this season.

Guillen hasn’t appeared in more than 113 games since the 2008 season due to a laundry list of injuries, but Polidor told Rojas that his client is “working like an animal in Miami” in hopes of latching on somewhere as a utility man. While Polidor insists that Guillen is drawing interest, one wonders how many teams will be willing to give him a guaranteed major-league contract at this point.

Yesterday the Chicago White Sox made a big signing of a new player, locking up catcher Yasmani Grandal for four years. Today they’ve made another big splash, re-signed current White Sox star José Abreu to a three-year, $50 million contract extension.

Abreu had already accepted the team’s qualifying offer last week so he was ensured of staying in Chicago for 2020, but now they’ll tear that up and replace it with this pact, adding two more years.

Abreu, who turns 33 before spring training, is coming off a 2019 season in which he posted a line of .284/.330/.503 with 33 home runs and 123 RBI. He has spent his entire major league career in Chicago, putting up a line of .293/.349/.513 and socking 179 homers in six seasons.
