Nationals re-sign Carlos Maldonado to minors contract

From beat writer Bill Ladson of MLB.com comes word that the Nationals have re-signed catcher Carlos Maldonado to a minor league contract.

Maldonado hasn’t appeared in a major league game since the 2010 season and posted an ugly-looking .234/.361/.342 slash line with one home run and 12 RBI in 38 games this past year at the Triple-A level.

The 32-year-old native of Venezuela will continue to function as organizational catching depth for the Nationals next season, behind big leaguers Wilson Ramos and Jesus Flores. Maldonado will only be promoted in the event of an injury.
