Andy MacPhail reconsidering leaving Orioles?

For most of September all indications were that Andy MacPhail planned to step down as Orioles president of baseball operations at season’s end, but now Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun reports that there’s growing chatter about MacPhail sticking around.

Connolly speculates that owner Peter Angelos talked MacPhail out of leaving during a meeting last week, noting that the lack of an expected announcement of any kind suggests he still hasn’t come to a decision either way.

There’s been some talk of Buck Showalter going from the dugout to the front office as MacPhail’s replacement, so it’s possible Angelos pitched MacPhail on the idea of staying in the role for another season or two to give Showalter a little more time as manager.

Video: Javier Báez jukes David Freese to avoid tag at first base

Cubs shortstop Javier Báez pulled off one of the best jukes you’ll see, avoiding the tag from David Freese on a play at first base in the second inning of Tuesday night’s game against the Dodgers. Báez barely made contact with a Kenta Maeda pitch well outside the strike zone, tapping it towards Freese. Báez halted his momentum, juking Freese while he attempted to apply the tag, then dove into first base.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts attempted to argue that Báez went out of the baseline, but the umpires’ no-call stood and Báez had himself a single. He would end up stranded on base, unfortunately for him and the Cubs.
