Drew Pomeranz impressive through two big league starts

The Rockies fell to the Giants on Saturday night in Colorado by a score of 6-5, but young left-hander Drew Pomeranz looked sharp and effective for the second time in two career major league starts.

Pomeranz allowed just four hits and two runs over 5 2/3 innings, striking out five San Francisco hitters while inducing 11 groundball outs. The 22-year-old tossed five shutout innings in his big league debut against the Reds last week and now boasts a 1.69 ERA through the first two outings of his MLB career.

Acquired from the Indians in late July as part of a package for Ubaldo Jimenez, Pomeranz was already considered one of the top pitching prospects in the game. And now he’s putting that potential into practice, with an eye on securing an Opening Day rotation spot for 2012.
