From beat writer Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News comes word that Giants closer Brian Wilson “aired it out” during a 22-pitch bullpen session Wednesday afternoon in San Diego.
Wilson, on the disabled list since mid-August due to right elbow inflammation, reported no lingering pain or discomfort in any part of his pitching arm.
He’s expected to throw another bullpen session Friday before potentially moving on to a simulated game early next week. Some have suggested that the Giants may shut Wilson down if they fall further out of contention in the National League West standings, but the club itself has made no indication that it’s leaning in that direction.
Wilson, 29, has registered a cool 3.19 ERA and 52/31 K/BB ratio through 53 2/3 innings this season, converting 35-of-40 save opportunities. The Giants have been using a commitee at closer in his absence.
