Carlos Quentin likely out until next week with shoulder injury

Carlos Quentin remains on the active roster despite a sprained left shoulder, but he hasn’t played since Saturday and Ozzie Guillen said last night that he’s unlikely to be back in the lineup before next week.

Dayan Viciedo is waiting in the wings at Triple-A as a potential fill-in for Quentin, but Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune notes that the White Sox are hoping Quentin can avoid the disabled list because that would rule him out for a crucial series against the division-leading Tigers next week.

Viciedo was sidelined recently by a hand injury of his own, but he’s healthy again and hitting .298 with 19 homers and an .852 OPS in 117 games at Triple-A. Quentin, who’s battled various injuries throughout his career, has hit .255 with 24 homers and an .842 OPS in 117 games for the White Sox.

Sportsnet’s Shi Davidi reports that the Blue Jays are considering moving starter Jaime Garcia to the bullpen. If they go that route, Sam Gaviglio would start in Garcia’s place on Sunday against the Angels.

Garcia, 31, has struggled to a 6.16 ERA with a 56/31 K/BB ratio in 61 1/3 innings over 13 starts this season. Gaviglio, meanwhile, has a 3.75 ERA with 35 striekouts and 11 walks in 36 innings across six starts and two relief appearances for the Jays this year.

Garcia inked a one-year, $10 million contract with the Jays in February. The deal includes a club option for the 2019 season worth $10 million with a $2 million buyout.
