White Sox place Phil Humber on DL after line drive to head

Phil Humber left last night’s game in the second inning after taking a line drive to the head, but actually tried to talk the White Sox’s trainer into letting him stay in and then told reporters afterward that he was planning to make his next start.

He won’t, as the White Sox have placed Humber on the disabled list and are expected to start rookie Zach Stewart in his place Wednesday.

It looks like Humber somehow avoided a serious injury, but given the long layoffs experienced by players who suffered concussions this season and last season the White Sox taking a cautious approach makes sense.

Plus, the time off may do Humber’s arm some good as well. Since coming out of nowhere to go 8-4 with a 2.69 ERA through early July he’s gone 0-4 with a 7.16 ERA in his last six outings, giving up 22 runs in 28 innings while allowing opponents to hit .358.
