Cancel that plan: No rehab start for Johan Santana this week

As of last week Johan Santana appeared to be on track to return from shoulder surgery with a minor-league rehab start Wednesday, but Adam Rubin of ESPN New York reports that those plans have changed.

General manager Sandy Alderson said yesterday that Santana will instead throw another simulated game at the Mets’ complex in Florida, saying the rehabbing left-hander’s next outing “will be in a controlled setting.”

Obviously getting Santana back into the rotation by mid-August would be welcome news for the Mets, but ultimately as long as he’s fully healthy and has a few appearances versus big-league hitters under his belt heading into the offseason the recovery can be considered successful.

Santana has been out for 10 months and is owed $55 million for the next two seasons, so whether he starts six games or three games down the stretch this season matters little in the bigger picture.
