CNBC’s Darren Rovell hears that the Yankees have sold $2.5 million in Derek Jeter merchandise since the shortstop collected his 3,000th hit by homering Saturday.

Rovell also reports that Steiner Sports, Jeter’s official memorabilia dealer, was so flooded with calls Saturday that its phone system crashed.

Whether the Yankees really thought Jeter would be worth $51 million over three seasons when they signed him last winter, they did know that Jeter’s charge to 3,000 hits would get them some of their money back.  They’re banking on the same thing from Alex Rodriguez if he can approach the home run record towards the end of his contract.
