Manager Terry Collins had the news following Sunday’s game against the Yankees: Jose Reyes was diagnosed with a Grade 1 hamstring strain after an MRI and remains day-to-day.
Grade 1 is the most mild grade of strain. Still, the safe play for the Mets would be to keep him shut down for the remaining seven games before the All-Star break and bring him back on July 15. At the very least, it sounds like he’ll miss at least the first two games of the four-game series against the Dodgers that begins Monday.
If the Mets opt to place Reyes on the DL, he’d be eligible to return July 18, meaning he’d also miss the first three games after the All-Star break.
Should Reyes be scratched from the All-Star Game, Arizona’s Stephen Drew would be the logical replacement. Alternatively, the NL could add second baseman Danny Espinosa, since there’d still be two shortstops on the roster in Troy Tulowitzki and Starlin Castro.
