Mets reliever Taylor Buchholz out for “foreseeable future” with depression and anxiety

Taylor Buchholz has been on the disabled list since late May with a shoulder injury, but the Mets just announced that the reliever will remain on the shelf for the “foreseeable future” due to depression and anxiety.

There’s probably a joke to be made here about playing for the Mets causing depression, but I tend to think this sort of thing doesn’t get treated seriously enough as is. And as we saw with Zack Greinke it can derail even a great player’s career, so for a journeyman like Buchholz it’s a very tough hurdle to get over.

Buchholz, who was with a half-dozen teams prior to joining the Mets and has had numerous injury setbacks along the way, was pitching very well with a 3.12 ERA and 26/7 K/BB ratio in 26 innings setting up Francisco Rodriguez before the original DL stint.
