Diamondbacks release 39-year-old infielder Melvin Mora

Not to be outdone by the Cardinals and Cubs, who both released struggling veterans on Wednesday evening, the Diamondbacks have cut ties with 39-year-old corner infielder Melvin Mora.

The news comes courtesy of Craig Grialou of KTAR 620 AM in Phoenix, Arizona.

Mora opened the season as the Diamondbacks’ primary third baseman, but the emergence of Ryan Roberts swiftly sent the longtime Oriole to the bench and he batted just .205/.220/.244 after May 1.

Mora may seek out a spot with another organization but will probably have to settle for a minor league deal. A native of Yaracuy, Venezuela, he has played 13 major league seasons — 10 of them for Baltimore.
