Pablo Sandoval “on pace to return in about two weeks”

Bruce Bochy shared some good news about Pablo Sandoval’s recovery from a fractured hamate bone, telling Adam Berry of MLB.com that the third baseman has begun fielding ground balls and taking light batting practice.

According to Bochy he could be ready to come off the disabled list in two weeks, which would be at the optimistic end of the initial 4-6 week recovery timetable Sandoval was given on April 30.

Sandoval was off to a great start before the injury, hitting .313 with five homers and a .904 OPS in 24 games while looking like a new man after shedding more than 30 pounds during the offseason. Mark DeRosa had been filling in for Sandoval, but now he’s on the disabled list with more wrist problems of his own and the Giants have recently shifted Miguel Tejada from shortstop to third base.
