Jim Tracy “extremely encouraged” by Ubaldo Jimenez’s bullpen session

On the disabled list with a cut in his right thumb cuticle, Ubaldo Jimenez threw a bullpen session yesterday and afterward manager Jim Tracy said he was “extremely encouraged” by what he saw.

Jimenez is scheduled to come off the DL and rejoin the rotation Monday, but Alden Gonzalez of MLB.com reports that first he’ll have to avoid a setback while throwing around 90 pitches in an extended spring training game.

He struggled to grip the ball while allowing six runs in six innings pitching through the finger injury on Opening Day and was replaced in the rotation by former No. 2 overall pick Greg Reynolds.
