Diamondbacks sign reliever Ron Mahay to minor league deal

With their current left-handed specialist Joe Paterson off to a shaky start the Diamondbacks have signed veteran reliever Ron Mahay to a minor-league contract, according to Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic.

Mahay, who was a replacement player during the 1994 strike and isn’t allowed into the MLBPA, has had a remarkably difficult time staying with one team for very long despite consistently putting up solid numbers.

He has a 3.83 career ERA, including a sub-4.30 ERA in five straight seasons and seven of the past eight years, yet the Diamondbacks would be his ninth different team.

Mahay had a 3.14 ERA and 33/11 K/BB ratio in 43 innings for Minnesota after they acquired him in mid-2009, but the Twins showed no interest in re-signing the 39-year-old southpaw this offseason and the Dodgers cut him loose in spring training.
