Luis Castillo signed a minor league contract, but won’t be going to the minors

As expected, general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. confirmed this morning that going to the minors isn’t actually a possibility for Luis Castillo even though he signed a minor-league contract with the Phillies yesterday.

Instead, he’ll either convince the Phillies to put him on the Opening Day roster or become a free agent again in two weeks. In the meantime the Phillies will be out zero dollars if he doesn’t make the team, as the minor-league deal didn’t come with a 40-man roster spot or a guaranteed salary.

In other words it’s a 10-day tryout, which is even more reason to view the signing as a no-brainer for a team with middle infield depth issues right now.
