Mariners ink Manny Delcarmen to minor league contract

From the Mariners’ official Twitter feed comes word that the club has reached agreement on a minor league contract with right-handed reliever Manny Delcarmen.

The contract carries an invitation to spring training, where Delcarmen will attempt to win a job in the Mariners’ Opening Day bullpen.

The 28-year-old posted an underwhelming 4.70 ERA and 1.39 WHIP across 44 innings with the Red Sox last season before they shipped him off to Colorado in late August for minor league pitcher Chris Balcom-Miller. Delcarmen didn’t fare much better in the Rockies’ bullpen, allowing 12 hits and six earned runs in just 8.1 innings of work down the stretch.

He has enjoyed some success in the past and may be able to bounce back in the pitcher-friendly confines of Safeco Field, but all indications are that Delcarmen’s best years are far behind him.

Wednesday night’s game at PNC Park between the Brewers and Pirates has been postponed, Bill Brink of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. No makeup date has been announced yet. As Brink points out, the two clubs meet again in Pittsburgh September 21-23 and both have an off day on the 20th, so that could be a potential makeup date.

Brent Suter and Chad Kuhl were scheduled to square off on the mound. Their starts will likely be pushed back to Thursday. The Pirates will host the Diamondbacks and the Brewers will host the Cardinals.

The Cubs won on Wednesday afternoon, so the Brewers are tied with the Cubs for first place in the NL Central. The Pirates are seven games back in third place.
