Jim Leyritz’s trial got underway today

The trial of former Yankees catcher Jim Leyritz starts today. He’s accused of DUI manslaughter, and the prosecution will attempt to prove that he ran a red light when his car crashed into one being driven by Fredia Ann Veitch, who was thrown from her vehicle and killed. Leyritz faces between four and 15 years in prison if convicted.

According to the AP, the trial is expected to last about four weeks and as many as 44 witnesses could testify. I have no idea how a trial where the key issue is whether someone ran a red light can take four weeks and 44 witnesses, but then again, I have no idea how a case like this can take three years to get to trial either.
