Rays name playoff rotation: Price, Shields, Garza, Davis

Tampa Bay announced its rotation for the ALDS. As expected David Price will start Game 1 and Game 5, but in a mild surprise the Rays have tabbed James Shields rather than Matt Garza to start Game 2.
Ultimately it doesn’t matter a whole lot, since both guys will end up starting just once in the series either way, but given that Shields led the league in runs, hits, and homers allowed while posting a career-worst 5.18 ERA some had pegged him for Game 3.
Of course, Shields has been the Opening Day starter for the Rays in each of the past three seasons and more importantly his secondary numbers such as strikeouts, walks, and ground-ball percentage all point to his performing significantly better than the 5.18 ERA would suggest.
Garza will start Game 3, followed by Wade Davis in Game 4 and Price in Game 5. Jeff Niemann pitched his way out of the playoff rotation by posting a 7.69 ERA in 11 starts after the All-Star break, while Davis went 6-1 with a 3.28 ERA in the second half.
