In a relative no-brainer, the Royals have picked up the $6 million option on David DeJesus for next season, according to Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star.
DeJesus, who turns 31 in December, needed season-ending surgery to repair a torn ligament in his right thumb after he
crashed into the outfield wall at Yankee Stadium on July 22. He
was batting .318/.354/.443 with five home runs and 37 RBI before
suffering the injury.
Factoring in his above average outfield defense, DeJesus is well worth retaining for the price of $6 million, but just because the Royals exercised the option doesn’t mean he will return. Remember, the Royals discussed trading DeJesus to a number of teams before the injury, so it’s possible that they could revisit those talks this winter.
