Andy Pettitte on track for Sunday return after rehab start

Andy Pettitte allowed two runs over five innings with Double-A Trenton on Tuesday night in what is expected to be his final rehab start, according to the Associated Press.

Pettitte threw 49 out of 67 pitches for strikes and added a few more in the bullpen to get him closer to his expected count of 80 pitches. He gave up six hits — including a solo home run — while striking out four, walking one and throwing a wild pitch. He escaped a bases-loaded, no-out jam in his final inning of work by inducing a double play ball and notching a strikeout.

Barring any setbacks, Pettitte is expected to make his long-awaited return from the disabled list on Sunday against the Orioles. The veteran left-hander has been sidelined since August 18 due to a strained left groin.

Pettitte is 11-2 with a 2.88 ERA over 18 starts this season. There’s still enough time for him to make at least two and perhaps three tuneup starts before the postseason begins.
