FanHouse’s Tom Krasovic reports that the Mariners “are starting to eye” Ted Simmons as a managerial candidate. Krasovic also reminds us that Mariners GM Jack Zduriencik and Simmons are longtime friends who worked together in the Pirates and Brewers organizations, so there’s that too.
As I said when he was mentioned as a possible candidate for the Marlins last month, Simmons has never managed before, and in the case of the Mariners — a team who just fired a guy who had never managed before — that may not be the best fit. Of course, if that guy had the kind of support from the front office that Zduriencik would presumably give his buddy Simmons if he took the job, he may not have been fired in the first place.
And yes, part of my reason for posting this is that I wanted to use the Ted Simmons pic again. I, I . . can’t look away.
