Adam Dunn stays put

It went down to the wire with big talk from lots of people, but at the end of the day Adam Dunn remains a National. He’ll be in the lineup tonight against the Phillies.

There’s little chance that Dunn would get traded in August on a waiver deal, it seems. Yes, he makes a lot of money, but the problem with him has never been the contract, it’s been the prospects in return. I can’t imagine that teams would allow Dunn to pass by on waivers and fall to the contenders who want him the most.

So the big question for him and the Nationals now is whether they’ll talk about a long term deal or if, rather, the Nats are content to let Dunn hit free agency.  It’s not as simple as taking the draft picks either. To do that the Nats would need to offer Dunn arbitration. And who knows? Dunn might just take it in order to make $15 million+ to play in D.C. another year, which he likes quite nicely, thank you very much.

Sportsnet’s Shi Davidi reports that the Blue Jays are considering moving starter Jaime Garcia to the bullpen. If they go that route, Sam Gaviglio would start in Garcia’s place on Sunday against the Angels.

Garcia, 31, has struggled to a 6.16 ERA with a 56/31 K/BB ratio in 61 1/3 innings over 13 starts this season. Gaviglio, meanwhile, has a 3.75 ERA with 35 striekouts and 11 walks in 36 innings across six starts and two relief appearances for the Jays this year.

Garcia inked a one-year, $10 million contract with the Jays in February. The deal includes a club option for the 2019 season worth $10 million with a $2 million buyout.
