Padres right-hander Mat Latos fired a complete game shutout on Thursday afternoon against the Giants, allowing only one hit and fanning six batters over nine impressive innings. The Friars escaped with a 1-0 victory.
Latos, 22, retired the first 15 batters he faced before surrendering an infield hit to Eli Whiteside to open the sixth inning. He needed only 106 pitches in the quick, two-hour game, and has now strung together quite a few impressive starts. Latos also shut out the Astros last time out and has a 0.97 WHIP through seven outings this season.
The Padres stand 22-12 on the year and boast a 3.5-game lead over the Giants in the National League West standings. Latos, despite his 3-3 record, deserves much of the credit for the excellent start.
