D-backs sign Jackson to $13.35 million deal

SI.com’s Jon Heyman reports that the Diamondbacks and arbitration-eligible right-hander Edwin Jackson have agreed to a two-year, $13.35 million contract.
The pact takes Jackson up to his first year of free agency. The 26-year-old asked for $6.25 million and was offered $4.6 million for 2010 when figures were exchanged last month. With a midpoint between those two totals coming in just north of $5.4 million, the Diamondbacks are essentially buying out his last arbitration season for about $8 million.
The Tigers put Jackson on the market this winter largely because they thought it’d be expensive to sign him beyond 2011. The Diamondbacks were unable to do a deal that took care of any free agent seasons, but given Jackson’s erratic track record, that’s not such a bad thing. It likely would have taken north of $35 million to sign him for four years, and he’s just not worthy of that kind of commitment yet.
