Report: Braves offer Johnny Damon one-year deal

MLB.com’s Mark Bowman reports that the Braves “have made a one-year offer to” Johnny Damon that includes “some money that would be deferred.” (UPDATE: That one-year offer “is believed to be worth at least $5 million.”)
Along those same lines, David O’Brien of the Atlanta Journal Constitution wrote this afternoon that the “Braves’ interest in Damon has increased” and Chipper Jones even contacted him about coming to Atlanta (presumably when he wasn’t busy hyping prospect Jason Heyward, who’d likely be kept in the minors by a Damon signing).
O’Brien adds that Damon and agent Scott Boras “haven’t backed off” their demand for a two-year deal, and are in fact telling teams that they already have a two-year offer on the table from someone. Of course, earlier this week Boras claimed that Damon had “four or five” offers on the table.
That table? Located on mars.

You can’t pick your family and no one knows that better than Giants shortstop Brandon Crawford. His sister Amy married Astros starter Gerrit Cole in November 2016, so the two players are brothers-in-law.

The two players have matched up against each other 18 times in the past, as Cole spent his first five seasons in the National League with the Pirates. Cole often won that battle, holding Crawford to four hits — all singles — in 18 plate appearances.

Crawford finally got the better of Cole on Tuesday night, hitting a line drive into the appropriately-named Crawford Boxes at Minute Maid Park for a two-run home run, cutting the Astros’ lead to 5-2.
