As expected, free agent Doug Brocail has chosen to retire, according to MLB.com’s Alyson Footer.
Brocail, 42, was injured for much of 2009 and finished with a 4.58 ERA in 17 2/3 innings. He reemerged as a solid setup man during the latter part of the decade despite missing three entire seasons from 2001-03 when he required two Tommy John surgeries. He ended up 52-48 with a 4.00 ERA and nine saves in 42 starts and 584 relief appearances.
