The Pirates have "zeroed in" on Octavio Dotel

On December 23rd, I reported that the Pirates had made a $3 million offer to Octavio Dotel to be their closer. The team denied it. Today, however, Dejan Kovacevic says that “Dotel is one of several relievers the team has offered a contract,” and that they have “zeroed in” on him.  He notes that that Dotel won’t make what he made last year, but last year he made $6 million.

Gee, I wonder if it was at all possible that my source was telling me the truth and the Pirates were being less than candid in their denial. Ah, forget it. The Pirates always tell the truth.

Anyway, whether the offer came in December or this morning, based on Kovacevic’s report, it looks like Dotel is going to be the closer in Pittsburgh this year.

Cubs acquire Terrance Gore from the Royals

The Chicago Cubs have acquired outfielder Terrance Gore from the Royals for cash considerations.

Gore has not played in the big leagues at all this season and only has 49 games and 14 plate appearances to his credit at the big league level over four seasons. Still, in that time, he has stolen 21 bases as a pinch-runner extraordinaire. That has extended into the postseason too, as he has four stolen bases in postseason play despite never having had a postseason plate appearance.

Figure the Cubs want some instant speed themselves, at the very least for September, when active rosters expand to 40-men. If he proves valuable then, and if the Cubs can find room for him, he’d be a useful playoff weapon as well.
