"The Yankees are smug and they are haughty"

Sure, that’s an incendiary quote from Jerry Green’s latest column in the Detroit News, but it’s said in the service of a pretty interesting and slightly more nuanced “the Yankees are all that is wrong with baseball” column than we’ve seen in the past few days.

Go beyond the headline and read the article.  The notion of the Yankees’ success is far more complex than the value of their payroll.  As much as it pains me to say it, baseball as we know it would not be the same without the history of the New York Yankees, and despite what everyone has said, their built-in business advantages have always been there.

Complaining about it seems beside the point right now.  I’m way more interested in hearing proposals of what to do about that advantage so as to diminish its impact as much as possible without killing the goose that has laid golden eggs for baseball for nearly a hundred years.
