Rangers name Yovani Gallardo as their Opening Day starter

According to T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com, the Rangers have named Yovani Gallardo as their Opening Day starter for April 6 against the Athletics. This will be his sixth straight Opening Day start and his first as a member of the Rangers.

Gallardo, who was acquired from the Brewers over the winter, posted a 3.51 ERA and 146/54 K/BB ratio in 192 1/3 innings across 32 starts with Milwaukee last season. He’s the next best option for the Rangers after their ace Yu Darvish underwent season-ending Tommy John surgery earlier this month. Derek Holland is currently lined up to start the home opener.

By the way, do you remember who the Rangers’ Opening Day starter was last year? I had to look it up to refresh my memory. It was Tanner Scheppers. That didn’t go so well.

Rangers tie a major league record, use their 59th player of the season

The Rangers called up 1B/OF Ryan Rua from Triple-A Round Rock earlier today to take the spot of the injured Jim Adduci on the 25-man roster. In doing so, Rua became the 59th player to don a Rangers uniform this season, tying a major league record according to ESPN’s Calvin Watkins. The record has been attained three other times: by the Padres twice in 2002 and 2008, and the Indians in 2002.

The Rangers have been ravaged by injuries all season long to many key players including Prince Fielder, Matt Harrison, Shin-Soo Choo, Derek Holland, Mitch Moreland, Jurickson Profar, and Tanner Scheppers.

It’s likely the record will be broken by the Rangers as starter Derek Holland is close to returning after missing the first five months of the season due to a knee injury suffered in January.

Tanner Scheppers has more elbow problems

Tanner Scheppers’ nightmare season continues, as the Rangers right-hander is now headed back to the disabled list with elbow inflammation.

Scheppers was moved from the bullpen to the rotation as the Opening Day starter because the Rangers’ starters dropped like flies due to injuries, but he struggled and was placed on the DL with elbow problems.

He returned last week, this time as a reliever again, but made it just four appearances before being shut down. Scheppers has a 2.77 ERA in 114 career relief innings, so if he can get healthy he’d be a big part of the Rangers’ bullpen in the second half, but right now things aren’t looking so good.

Tanner Scheppers was shut down with an elbow injury after allowing 20 runs in 18 innings in his move into the Rangers’ rotation, but now the right-hander is off the disabled list and … back in the bullpen.

Texas made Scheppers the Opening Day starter with zero career starts under his belt, but now the Rangers will hope they can wipe away that bad memory and allow him to resume thriving as a reliever. Scheppers had a 1.88 ERA in 77 innings out of the bullpen last season, although he’s said all along that he’d rather be in the rotation.

He posted a 9.82 ERA in four starts while showing decreased velocity.
