MLB.com’s Scott Merkin reports that the White Sox have re-signed right-handed reliever Mitchell Boggs, whom they released last Sunday¬†in a round of cuts.

Boggs was among the top setup men in baseball two seasons ago and opened the 2013 campaign as the Cardinals’ closer, but his career has taken a steep dive since he lost that job. The 30-year-old allowed 11 hits, two walks, and nine earned runs across 6 1/3 innings this spring in White Sox camp.

He’ll act as organizational relief depth for ’em now.

The White Sox announced — via Facebook and other outlets — that they have released right-hander Mitchell Boggs, who signed a minor league contract with the Pale Hose in early February and had been competing for a bullpen job this spring in camp.

Boggs was one of the best setup men in baseball in 2012 and opened the 2013 season as the Cardinals’ primary closer, but he blew a bunch of early save opportunities and was traded to the Rockies in July for international signing money. He showed some promise at the end of last season in Colorado, but the struggles returned this spring in the Cactus League.

Boggs allowed nine earned runs on 11 hits in 6 1/3 innings this spring for the White Sox.

The 30-year-old native of Dalton, Georgia will try to latch on with a new team.

Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reports that the White Sox have signed Mitchell Boggs to a one-year, $1.1 million deal.

Boggs was a mess last season for the Cardinals, posting a 11.05 ERA in 18 appearances before a demotion to Triple-A. He was traded to the Rockies in July and walked as many batters as he struck out in nine appearances. However, from 2010-2012 he threw 201 innings with a 3.08 ERA for St. Louis and he was briefly tabbed as St. Louis’ closer.

For a cheap one-year flier he makes sense and the White Sox could use the bullpen help after trading closer Addison Reed to the Diamondbacks.
