Mauro Gomez is headed to Japan

Mauro Gomez, who was claimed off waivers by the Nationals from the Blue Jays in September, has been released so that he can sign with a Japanese team.

Gomez played 37 games for the Red Sox in 2012, hitting .275 with a .746 OPS as a first baseman/third baseman, and at age 29 has logged nearly 1,500 plate appearances at Triple-A.

His power numbers in the minors have always been impressive and it’s possible he could have worked his way into a bench gig for 2014, but Japan no doubt offers a lot more job security and a bigger pay check after a decade in the minors.

Blue Jays claim Mauro Gomez off waivers from Red Sox

Boston designated Mauro Gomez for assignment last week to clear room on the 40-man roster for Jackie Bradley Jr. and Toronto has claimed the first baseman off waivers.

Gomez held his own in his first taste of the majors last season, hitting .275 with a .746 OPS in 37 games as a 27-year-old rookie, and has hit .307 with a .913 OPS in 235 games at Triple-A.

Toronto dropped David Bush from the 40-man roster to make space for Gomez, who profiles as a productive platoon starter versus left-handed pitching if given an extended opportunity. For now, though, he’ll head back to Triple-A.

From beat writer Tim Britton of the Providence Journal comes word that the Red Sox have purchased the contract of outfielder Jackie Bradley Jr. from Double-A Portland. Mauro Gomez was designated for assignment to clear roster space.

Bradley will start in left field for the Red Sox on Opening Day and could stay up all year if he plays well enough. The 22-year-old batted .419/.507/.613 with four doubles, two home runs and 12 RBI in 28 games this spring in the Grapefruit League.

Bradley hit .315/.430/.482 with 42 doubles, nine homers, 24 stolen bases and 63 RBI in 128 games last summer between High-A Salem and Double-A Portland. He ranked 31st on Baseball America‘s list of the Top 100 prospects this winter.

The Orioles are probably gonna be a bit miffed at the Red Sox today

The Orioles and Yankees are locked in pitched battle for the AL East. And this is the lineup the Red Sox are rolling out against the Yankees tonight:

Pedro Ciriaco, 2B
Daniel Nava LF
Cody Ross RF
Mauro Gomez 1B
Ryan Lavarnway DH
Jarrod Saltalamacchia C
Danny Valencia 3B
Che-Hsuan Lin CF
Jose Iglesias SS

Come to think of it, Clay Buchholz isn’t gonna be too pleased with it either.
