Twins welcome back Jason Marquis, designate Luke Hughes for assignment

Jason Marquis was away from the Twins during spring training because his daughter got into a serious bicycling accident, but after building up his arm strength at Double-A he’s ready to join the rotation tonight.

He faces the Yankees in New York, so welcome back and … good luck.

Rather than dropping a pitcher to make room for Marquis on the roster the Twins kept a 13-man pitching staff and instead designated infielder Luke Hughes for assignment. That move is somewhat surprising, but Hughes is a poor defensive second baseman/third baseman who doesn’t really hit enough to be an everyday option at first base or an outfield corner.

There’s a decent chance another team claims him off waivers, but at age 27 and with little success in the majors or at Triple-A the Twins are unlikely to regret losing Hughes.

Twins infielder Luke Hughes out 3-4 weeks after injuring shoulder in Australia

Luke Hughes injured his shoulder while playing winter ball back home in Australia and left the Perth Heat during the playoffs at the Twins’ request to undergo an MRI exam in Minnesota.

Joe Christensen of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports that the MRI revealed a sprained shoulder and Hughes will be shut down for 3-4 weeks, which likely means he’ll miss the Twins’ early spring training games.

Hughes is out of minor-league options, so if he doesn’t win a bench spot the Twins would have to trade him or risk losing the 27-year-old infielder on waivers. He hit .223 with seven homers and a .627 OPS in 96 games as a rookie last season and, if healthy, is expected to be a backup corner infielder.
