Mets sign Taylor Teagarden

Adam Rubin of ESPN New York reports that the Mets have added some catching depth by signing Taylor Teagarden to a minor-league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Teagarden was once considered a pretty solid catching prospect, but now he’s 30 years with a lengthy injury history and just 163 total games in the majors.

He profiles as merely a backup at this point and will likely compete with Anthony Recker and Juan Centeno to serve as rookie Travis d’Arnaud’s caddy.

News Flash: Billy Hamilton was thrown out stealing

Billy Hamilton

Well, it had to happen eventually. I just didn’t think it’d happen today. Billy Hamilton was just thrown out stealing. With Daisuke Matsuzaka on the mound of all people.

Hamilton reached first base on an infield single. He might have been out — it looked close — but he was called safe. He took off on the exceedingly slow-working Dice-K on the second pitch. But Mets catcher Juan Centeno gunned him down.

Probably worth noting that while Dice-K is a slow worker, once he finally comes set and goes to the plate, he’s not particularly slower in terms of windup and stuff as anyone else. It does feel weird, though, that the fastest man this side of The Flash was tossed while Dice-K was pitching.

Hats off to Juan Centeno, though.
