After being released by the Mariners in spring training Jon Garland signed with the Rockies and won a rotation spot, but 12 mostly bad starts later Colorado has cut the 33-year-old right-hander loose.
Garland had a 5.82 ERA in 68 innings for the Rockies, posting a terrible 32/23 K/BB ratio while serving up nine homers and allowing opponents to hit .315. And he can’t blame it all on Coors Field, as Garland had a 5.73 ERA in six road starts.
Roy Oswalt looks just about ready to join the Rockies after one or two more starts in the minors, which likely helped convince the Rockies to part ways with Garland.
The Rockies have added starter Jeff Francis back to the roster from the 15-day disabled list. Francis had missed three weeks with a strained left groin. In eight starts, the lefty had a 6.00 ERA in 36 innings of work. He will start tonight against the Padres, opposing Eric Stults.
In a corresponding move, the Rockies designated starter Jon Garland for assignment, per Troy Renck. They had signed the right-hander to a Minor League contract at the end of March and broke camp with him, but he did not fare well in his first time back in the Majors since 2011. The 33-year-old Garland posted a 5.82 ERA in 68 innings spanning 12 starts.
Renck also reports that Tyler Colvin is with the team today from Triple-A Colorado Springs, where he had a .919 OPS in 226 trips to the plate. The Rockies have optioned Josh Outman, currently sitting on a 4.94 ERA, to make room for Colvin on the roster.
Rays shortstop Yunel Escobar was forced out of tonight’s game against the Rockies after being hit on the left hand with a fastball thrown by Jon Garland. Escobar left immediately and Ryan Roberts came in to take his spot on first base. After the inning, Roberts took over at second base and Ben Zobrist moved from second to shortstop.
Escobar was struggling, entering the night with a .174 average and .507 OPS. He is listed as day-to-day according to Mark Topkin. The Rays could continue to use Zobrist at short and Roberts at second, or they could use Kelly Johnson — who has logged 78 defensive innings in the outfield — at second as well.
