Endy Chavez opts out of contract, released by Mariners

Endy Chavez has opted out of his minor-league contract with the Mariners, who released the veteran outfielder at his request.

Chavez appeared in 80 games for the Mariners last season, hitting .276 with two homers and a .688 OPS. That was actually his best production since 2011, but Seattle didn’t want him around in a bench role and he didn’t want to go to Triple-A.

At age 37 it’s tough to see Chavez getting a big-league offer for Opening Day.
