Video: Manny Machado becomes youngest player in Orioles history to reach 100 doubles

Manny Machado dropped this Drew Smyly pitch into right field Tuesday for his 100th career double

As stated in the headline, Machado is the youngster player in the 115-year history of the Orioles franchise to reach 100 doubles (at 23 years and 57 days old). And he did it on the night the O’s are celebrating the 20th anniversary of Cal Ripken breaking Lou Gehrig’s record for consecutive games played.

Miguel Sano robbed of home run by catwalk at Tropicana Field

Twins rookie slugger Miguel Sano hit another mammoth blast tonight against the Rays. The only problem is that the catwalk at Tropicana Field got in the way.

With a runner on and two outs against Drew Smyly in the top of the third inning, Sano hit a towering fly ball to left-center field which appeared destined to land for a two-run home run. However, the ball bounced off the B-ring catwalk and landed behind second base in shallow center field. Per the ground rules, Sano was awarded a double. That’s no fun at all.

You can watch the play here. Per MLB Gameday, the ball left Sano’s bat at 111 mph and was estimated to travel 409 feet. That feels little a little low.

Rays activate Drew Smyly from 60-day disabled list

Drew Smyly

As announced late Saturday night by the Rays’ official Twitter account, left-hander Drew Smyly has been activated from the disabled list and will start Sunday in Tampa Bay’s series finale against the Rangers. Kirby Yates was optioned to Triple-A Durham to clear out a 25-man roster spot.

Smyly has been sidelined since the first week of May with a partially-torn labrum in his left shoulder. The 26-year-old southpaw had a 2.70 ERA in three starts before the injury and boasts a 1.96 ERA in 10 total appearances (64 1/3 innings) since joining the Rays in last summer’s David Price trade.

Smyly is under contractual control with Tampa Bay through the 2018 season.
