Play of the Day: Garrett Jones hits the Allegheny on the fly

For just the second time in PNC Park’s 13-year history, a player hit a home run into the Allegheny River on the fly. Garrett Jones became the first Pirate to do so when he slugged a two-run, game-tying home run off of Reds reliever Jonathan Broxton down the right field line, clearing the sidewalk in front of the water by a good five feet or so. The Pirates eventually went on to win 5-4 in 11 innings.

Daryle Ward is the other player to hit the Allegheny on the fly, accomplishing the feat on July 6, 2002. ESPN’s Home Run Tracker recounts the event here.
