Not only did Joe Maddon shave his head today as promised, the manager convinced a total of 70 other members of the Rays organization to join him in the name of charity.
Everyone from Evan Longoria and David Price to owner Stu Sternberg and executive vice president Andrew Friedman got in on the action, raising money for pediatric cancer research.
Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports that they’re hoping to raise more than $250,000.
Jose Reyes cutting his hair and selling it for $10,200 in a charity auction was such a big deal (or there was such little in the way of real news) that MLB Network broadcast the clipping of his dreadlocks live in prime time.
Reyes’ new teammate, ace Josh Johnson, didn’t get quite the same attention for shaving his head in the name of charity today, but Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald has photographic proof that it happened nonetheless:
Johnson is donating the contents of that bucket to the “Locks for Love” charity that “provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children under 21 suffering from long-term medical hair loss.”
