Royals sign right-hander Yohan Pino

This isn’t quite on the level of the reported Alex Rios deal, but the Royals announced today they signed right-hander Yohan Pino to a one-year, major league contract. Exact terms aren’t yet known.

Pino, who turns 31 later this month, made 11 starts for the Twins this past season and posted a 5.07 ERA and 50/14 K/BB ratio over 60 1/3 innings. He had a 2.47 ERA and 72/24 K/BB ratio in 73 innings over nine starts and seven relief appearances in Triple-A. The move gives the Royals some rotation depth at the very least.

In order to clear a spot for Pino on the 40-man roster, the Royals designated right-hander Casey Coleman for assignment. The 27-year-old has compiled a 5.72 ERA over 26 starts and 32 relief appearances in the majors, including a 5.25 ERA and 5/6 K/BB ratio over 12 innings this past season.

Dodgers make trade proposal to Cubs for Ryan Dempster

According to Bruce Levine of ESPNChicago.com, the Dodgers have made a trade proposal to the Cubs for right-hander Ryan Dempster.

And, well, that’s all we have right now. Talks are said to be “fluid” and it isn’t clear whether top prospect right-hander Zach Lee is included in the Dodgers’ proposal. That seems unlikely, as it would be a pretty hefty price to pay for an impending free agent who can’t be offered arbitration. For Matt Garza? Sure. He’s under team control for another year. But Dempster? Probably not.

The Cubs seem to be preparing for the possibility that a deal, not necessarily with the Dodgers, will go down prior to Dempster’s scheduled start tomorrow tonight against the Cardinals. The club acquired Justin Germano from the Red Sox from cash considerations tonight and have summoned right-hander Casey Coleman from Triple-A Iowa to join the team tomorrow in St. Louis. While it’s no sure thing that a trade will happen by tomorrow night, either pitcher could conceivably start in Dempster’s place.

Dempster, 35, leads the majors with a 1.86 ERA through 14 starts this season and currently holds a 33-inning scoreless streak. He is reportedly drawing interest from a long list of contenders, including the Tigers and Braves. The Red Sox are said to be out of the mix. He has 10-and-5 rights, but has expressed a willingness to be traded to a contender.

UPDATE: Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reports that Zach Lee will not be in a deal for a rental like Dempster. That sounds about right.

Cubs acquire Justin Germano, scratch Casey Coleman

Justin Germano

It looks like the Cubs are preparing for an inevitable Ryan Dempster trade.

The team today acquired right-hander Justin Germano from the Red Sox for cash considerations and scratched Casey Coleman from his start for Triple-A Iowa.

It’s assumed that Coleman would be promoted to pitch tomorrow against the Cardinals if a Dempster trade gets done before then.

Germano, who was designated for assignment by Boston earlier this week, was 9-4 with a 2.40 ERA and a 72/13 K/BB ratio in 105 innings for Triple-A Pawtucket this season. The veteran right-hander could soak up innings at the back of the rotation or in middle relief once the Cubs trade their prized pitchers.

Coleman made 16 relief appearances for the Cubs earlier this season, but he started eight games in 2010 and 17 last year. The 25-year-old is 7-12 with a 5.70 ERA in 25 starts and 22 relief appearances overall for the club.
