Anthony Gose forgets how many outs there after catching fly ball, run scores from second base

Tigers center fielder Anthony Gose had a moment to forget in today’s game against the Blue Jays. I mean that literally, because he forgot how many outs there were after catching a fly ball in the fourth inning.

With Ryan Goins at second base, Josh Donaldson hit a fly ball to deep center field. The speedy Gose had some trouble picking it up initially, but he eventually caught up with it at the warning track for the out. He thought it was the end of the inning, so Goins was able to scamper all the way home. You can watch the play here.

Gose’s brain camp was embarrassing, but it doesn’t really matter much, as the Tigers are losing big to the Blue Jays. Brad Ausmus’ club appears poised to fall further back in last place in the AL Central.

Fan hit by foul ball in Detroit; Justin Verlander stumps in favor of protective netting

A fan at Comerica Park in Detroit was struck by a foul ball off the bat of Tigers outfielder Anthony Gose during the bottom of the eighth inning of Friday night’s game against the Rangers. The game was delayed for seven minutes while the woman was given medical attention, as ESPN’s Katie Strang and The Associated Press report.

Strang tweeted that the fan was given a neck brace and taken off in a stretcher. She was taken to Detroit Receiving Hospital. She was alert and conscious.

Verlander tweeted after the game, showing his support for Major League Baseball increasing protective netting at the ballpark:

Strang adds context:

Tempers flared in the Tigers’ dugout between Jose Iglesias and James McCann

Jose Iglesias

Update (10:18 PM EST): Here’s video of the altercation, via MLB.com.

TV cameras caught a disagreement between Tigers shortstop Jose Iglesias and catcher James McCann, among others. McCann, it seems, was upset that Iglesias appeared to give up on a Rusney Castillo single with two outs in the sixth inning. The Red Sox scored two runs on the next play, a double by Xander Bogaerts, which increased the Tigers’ deficit to 7-2.

Iglesias and McCann were seen yelling at each other, and Iglesias shoved McCann. The two were separated by teammates Nick Castellanos and Ian Kinsler. Anthony Gose had some words with Iglesias in the dugout later.

It’ll be interesting to see what comes of this after the game.
