Report: Giants to acquire Alejandro De Aza from Red Sox

The Giants pulled off a last-minute deal before the waiver trade deadline, as FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal reports that the team has acquired outfielder Alejandro De Aza from the Red Sox. According to Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle, Boston will receive minor league left-hander Luis Ysla in return.

Rosenthal reported earlier tonight that the Giants were in touch with the Red Sox about De Aza and were also looking at some infield targets. Some speculated on the Dodgers as a potential fit, but the defending World Series champions got the deal done.

De Aza was cast aside by the Orioles after getting off to a miserable start this season, but he batted .292/.347/.484 with 18 extra-base hits (including four home runs) and 25 RBI in 60 games after joining the Red Sox in June. The Giants already acquired Marlon Byrd from the Reds in August after Hunter Pence went down with an oblique injury, but De Aza will provide manager Bruce Bochy with some extra depth from the left side of the plate.

Dodgers place Enrique Hernandez on disabled list with hamstring injury

Enrique Hernandez has begun to take away playing time from the struggling Joc Pederson in recent days, but now the Dodgers will have to make due without him for a while.

After leaving Sunday’s game against the Cubs with what was termed as left hamstring tightness, Hernandez was placed on the 15-day disabled list this evening. The move says a lot about his status, as rosters are set to expand tomorrow. Dodgers manager Don Mattingly told Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times this evening that Hernandez could be sidelined for “at least” two weeks.

The Dodgers are already missing Howie Kendrick and Yasiel Puig due to hamstring injuries, so it will be interesting to see if they make a last-minute deal before tonight’s waiver deadline. With that in mind, FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal speculates that the Dodgers could make a run at Alejandro De Aza, who is also drawing interest from the Giants.

Hernandez has been excellent in a super utility role this season, batting .308/.350/.492 with six home runs and 21 RBI over 201 plate appearances.

Red Sox looking to trade outfielder Alejandro De Aza

Last week’s rumored trade with the Dodgers apparently fell through, but the Red Sox are still looking to deal outfielder Alejandro De Aza before the end of the month.

Sean McAdam of CSNNE.com reports that De Aza cleared waivers, meaning he can be traded freely to any team, and as a solid left-handed bat capable of playing all three outfield positions he should generate at least some interest from contenders looking to add depth for September and the playoffs.

De Aza is a career .268 hitter with a .737 OPS, including a .268 batting average and .770 OPS in 87 games this season. As a 31-year-old impending free agent he’s clearly not in the Red Sox’s plans, but they should be able to snag a low-level prospect for him in the next few days.
