Yadier Molina fined $5,000 for shoving umpire Jerry Meals in Game 1 of the NLDS

Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reports that Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina has been fined $5,000 by Major League Baseball for shoving aside home plate umpire Jerry Meals during an altercation with Dodgers first baseman Adrian Gonzalez during Game 1 of the NLDS. Molina was able to avoid a suspension.

The altercation occurred after Adam Wainwright hit Yasiel Puig with a pitch, which upset Gonzalez. Gonzalez voiced his displeasure to Molina and the two got face-to-face to shout at each other. Meals attempted to separate the two, but an irate Molina pushed Meals aside to continue to yell in Gonzalez’s face.

In the four games the Cardinals needed to dispatch the Dodgers from the NLDS, Molina had two singles and a double in 15 at-bats with zero RBI and a pair of runs scored.

Here are the lineups for Game 4 of the Dodgers-Cardinals series in St. Louis:

Dodgers:
2B Dee Gordon
LF Carl Crawford
1B Adrian Gonzalez
RF Matt Kemp
SS Hanley Ramirez
CF Andre Ethier
3B Juan Uribe
C A.J. Ellis
SP Clayton Kershaw

In addition to making the call to start Clayton Kershaw on short rest manager Don Mattingly also made a big change by benching Yasiel Puig in favor of Andre Ethier. Puig is better than Ethier defensively and had a significantly higher OPS versus right-handers this season (.901 to .710), so this is Mattingly playing the small sample size/gut feeling game.

Cardinals:
3B Matt Carpenter
RF Randal Grichuk
LF Matt Holliday
SS Jhonny Peralta
1B Matt Adams
C Yadier Molina
CF Jon Jay
2B Kolten Wong
SP Shelby Miller

Lefty-hitting rookie Kolten Wong was on the bench against Kershaw in Game 1, but after homering last night he’s in the lineup this time around instead of Pete Kozma. In fact, Cardinals manager Mike Matheny is sticking with an identical lineup to Game 3.

Hanley Ramirez doubles to tie things up in NLDS Game 3 vs. Cardinals

The Dodgers have drawn even in Game 3 of the NLDS against the Cardinals.

After Matt Carpenter hit a solo homer in the third inning to give St. Louis an early 1-0 lead, Hanley Ramirez doubled home Yasiel Puig in the top of the sixth to tie things up.

Puig had struck out in seven straight plate appearances — one shy of tying the postseason record — before he tripled into the right field corner to begin the sixth. John Lackey responded by getting Adrian Gonzalez to fly out to shallow left field and then struck out Matt Kemp swinging, but Ramirez doubled to right field to get Puig home. The Dodgers were 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position tonight before Ramirez’s hit.

Lackey struck out Carl Crawford swinging to avoid any further damage, but it’s a 1-1 game as we go into the bottom of the sixth at Busch Stadium.

During the Cardinals-Dodgers dust-up in Game 1 of the NLDS St. Louis catcher Yadier Molina shoved umpire Jerry Meals out of the way to continue his face-to-face shouting match with Los Angeles first baseman Adrian Gonzalez.

Molina was not ejected from the game, but clearly made contact with an umpire and … well, that’s a no-no.

Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports that Molina will not receive a suspension from MLB, but “will be fined substantially.” No specifics about what that means, exactly, but presumably it’ll be more than the usual $5,000 variety. Molina is making $15 million this season.

Here’s video of benches clearing and Molina making contact with Meals:

Here are the lineups for Game 3 of the Dodgers-Cardinals series in St. Louis:

Dodgers:
2B Dee Gordon
CF Yasiel Puig
1B Adrian Gonzalez
RF Matt Kemp
SS Hanley Ramirez
LF Carl Crawford
3B Juan Uribe
C A.J. Ellis
SP Hyun-Jin Ryu

Don Mattingly sticks with his usual lineup.

Cardinals:
3B Matt Carpenter
RF Randal Grichuk
LF Matt Holliday
SS Jhonny Peralta
1B Matt Adams
C Yadier Molina
CF Jon Jay
2B Kolten Wong
SP John Lackey

Against left-hander Hyun-Jin Ryu this is a similar lineup to what the Cardinals used versus left-hander Clayton Kershaw in Game 1, except this time lefty-hitting rookie Kolten Wong is starting at second base instead of righty-hitting veteran Pete Kozma.
