Free agent reliever John Axford has interest from four teams, one of which is the Blue Jays, according to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports. Axford hails from Ontario, Canada so a deal with the Jays would be a homecoming of sorts.
Axford, 31, spent most of his 2014 season with the Indians. He struggled early and was removed from the closer’s role in May. In August, the Pirates selected him off waivers. Overall, Axford finished with a 3.95 ERA and a 63/36 K/BB ratio in 54 2/3 innings.
MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand reports that there is some momentum in talks between the Mariners and free agent outfielder Jon Jay.
Jay, 32, hit .296/.374/.375 in 433 plate appearances with the Cubs last season, which is adequate. He’s heralded more for his defense and his ability to play all three outfield spots.
The Mariners are losing center fielder Jarrod Dyson to free agency and likely don’t want to rely on Guillermo Heredia next season, hence the interest in Jay. The free agent class for center fielders is otherwise relatively weak.
