Henderson Alvarez leaves start with a strained oblique

Henderson Alvarez has been a bright spot for the Marlins this year, posting a 10-6 record with a 2.75 ERA and earning himself an All-Star appearance. His 26th start was not so good, however.

Alvarez left today’s start against the Mets in the third inning after showing apparent discomfort and decreased velocity. A few moments ago it was announced that he has a left oblique strain. He’s day to day.

The Marlins, who in the past couple of weeks have at least flirted with the wild card a bit, are now 6.5 games back of a playoff spot. Losing Alvarez for even a start or two wouldn’t do much for their already fading chances.

The Mets have scratched Jacob deGrom from tonight’s start against the San Diego Padres because of the risk of rain in New York. Rafael Montero will start in deGrom’s place.

Manager Terry Collins said there is no physical issue with deGrom, but that because of the chance of rain, he didn’t want to risk a short outing. de Grom will start Friday’s game against the Pirates.

Red Sox to activate David Price for a Monday start

Earlier today we talked about how David Price was knocked around in a minor league rehab start. Apparently he felt good while being knocked around because he’s going to make a start for the Red Sox on Monday afternoon against the White Sox.

Healthy is all that truly matters at this point, what with Drew Pomeranz struggling and Steven Wright out for the year. The Sox need someone to eat some innings at the moment. If it takes him a bit to get super sharp, well, so be it.
