Watch as Orioles right-hander Nick Markakis leaps to rob White Sox third baseman Conor Gillaspie of a potential go-ahead two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh inning tonight:
Markakis went on to hit a two-run homer in his next at-bat and finished 3-for-5 with two runs scored, so he had himself a mighty fine evening. The Orioles won the game 8-2 and now have a 71-52 record on the year, putting them seven games up on the Yankees and 7 1/2 games ahead of the Blue Jays in the American League East.
MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand reports that there is some momentum in talks between the Mariners and free agent outfielder Jon Jay.
Jay, 32, hit .296/.374/.375 in 433 plate appearances with the Cubs last season, which is adequate. He’s heralded more for his defense and his ability to play all three outfield spots.
The Mariners are losing center fielder Jarrod Dyson to free agency and likely don’t want to rely on Guillermo Heredia next season, hence the interest in Jay. The free agent class for center fielders is otherwise relatively weak.
