Nationals manager Matt Williams was asked on Wednesday evening whether there has been any talk of sending struggling outfielder Bryce Harper to Triple-A Syracuse. CSNWashington.com has the video:
So, yeah … not gonna happen. Harper is hitting .207 with a .616 OPS since July 4 and .249 with a .692 OPS overall, but this isn’t a typical slumping 21-year-old. It’s a 21-year-old with 1,299 career plate appearances in the major leagues and a world of raw talent. He’s going to have to figure it out in Washington, not Syracuse.
MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand reports that there is some momentum in talks between the Mariners and free agent outfielder Jon Jay.
Jay, 32, hit .296/.374/.375 in 433 plate appearances with the Cubs last season, which is adequate. He’s heralded more for his defense and his ability to play all three outfield spots.
The Mariners are losing center fielder Jarrod Dyson to free agency and likely don’t want to rely on Guillermo Heredia next season, hence the interest in Jay. The free agent class for center fielders is otherwise relatively weak.
